Based on Carla Molins Pitarch’s PhD, we used the Tangible Scientific Concepts Design Process toolkit to develop an educational prototype explaining DNA helix fundamentals in the body.
Our work was divided into the following stages:
- Ideation
- Prototyping
- Testing
- Final Prototype
The goal of this stage was gathering as many ideas as possible and collecting them. Finally, we focused on one idea and defined: What? Why? Where? When? How? For whom?
Visitors explore the DNA bases “letters” by trying out how they fit together.

We developed construction ideas for a tangible interface providing feedback on correct and incorrect DNA base matches.
We used paper cards and pipe cleaners to build a wireframe prototype and conducted usability testing with 8 participants.
Using test insights, we created a final prototype with circuitry for visual feedback on DNA letter matching.
